We are a Northamptonshire based couple setting up as Boerboel breeders. We have owned dogs and horses all of our lives and two years ago fell in love with our first Boerboel. These dogs were bred in South Africa as versatile family guard dogs. They are the only breed specifically developed to guard without being aggressive. They are sometimes used on farms for herding but their key characteristic is their love of their family and keen instinct to protect them and their property. You can trust your Boerboel to look after young children and to play happily with them, whilst immediately recognising any threat or strangers near by.
You should want a Boerboel for its loving, calm, even temperament and ability to play with all members of the family. They are medium-large dogs; with females being around 62 cm tall and weighing around 50 kg. The males are slightly bigger and could grow to weigh around 70 kg. They are rare in the UK, with currently only around 80 dogs living here.
If you want to own one of these very special dogs there are two options available to you. You can import one from abroad but the youngest legal import will be nine months old and have to go through quarantine. This option will cost at least £3000. The second option is to buy a puppy at eight weeks from a litter born in the UK. Please see our puppy page for advice on buying a puppy.
